So we went looking for hotels that already had a story to tell. Old merchant houses in Hamburg, former inns and guesthouses in the Alps, Wilhelminian townhouses and harbour buildings. Places that had grown tired but never lost their character. We restored them, not renovated them. We refurbished furniture rather than replacing it. We honoured what the buildings already were – and carefully built on that. Then we opened the doors.
