Speicherstadt & Miniatur Wunderland: Brick walls, wooden walkways, waterways. The Speicherstadt is pure Hamburg.The largest model railway in the world awaits in Miniatur Wunderland – detailed, surprising and popular with all age groups.

The Elbphilharmonie: a building made of glass and waves - concert hall, landmark, vantage point. A visit to the plaza is always worthwhile.

Landing stages: Ferries, launches, ships from all over the world. A place where you can stop, look and enjoy a fish sandwich.

Michel (St Michael's Church): Baroque, mighty, bright. Those who climb the steps to the top are rewarded with a view over the Elbe, harbour and rooftops.

Alster walk

Walking around the Alster means: wind in your face, water next to you, sailing boats in view. The path runs past cafés, piers and old villas – a walk that shows Hamburg from its relaxed side.

Ride on the harbour ferry

Get on, find a seat, set off. The HVV ferries are Hamburg's most beautiful shortcut across the Elbe. Harbour cranes, shipyards, seagulls – all very close. And the feeling of briefly being part of the city's movement.

Visit to the Kunsthalle

Rooms full of light, centuries of art, new perspectives on every wall. A place where you stay longer than you thought you would – and yet leave with a clearer head.

Planten un Blomen

Greenery in the centre of the city. Wide lawns, streams, old trees. You stroll a little, sit down somewhere, hear children laughing and water splashing. A park for days when you don't have to do anything.

Oberhafen canteen

A small house with crooked walls and lots of character. Inside it smells of honest food, outside of the harbour. You sit, order, watch – and understand why this canteen has long been a cult favourite.

Dyke road

Experience Hamburg's oldest town houses on Nikolaifleet. There are many restaurants here, some of which also offer seating directly on the canal. From Deichstraße, it is also not far to the Landungsbrücken, the Speicherstadt and HafenCity.

Blankenese, staircase district and Elbe beach

Blankenese feels like a holiday on the outskirts of the city. Fresh air, white houses, narrow paths that wind steeply down the slope. It's easy to get lost in the stepped neighbourhood – up steps, down steps, past gardens, until the Elbe suddenly appears. Down on the Elbe beach, everything slows down a little. Ships pass by, seagulls call, and the sand is soft enough to walk on barefoot. A place for long afternoons, short breaks and the feeling of being both far away and yet in the centre of Hamburg.

Haseldorfer Marsch: Wind and sheep on the dyke

The Haseldorfer Marsch begins to the west of Hamburg. Green meadows, ditches, thatched houses behind the dyke. The Haseldorfer Marsch is one of the largest nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein and offers typical marshland landscapes with freshwater mudflats, rich bird populations, rare plants and endless paths for walking. If you're lucky, you'll see sheep standing right on the dyke – and behind them the Elbe, calm or windy, depending on your mood. An excursion that smells of country air and clears your head.

Lübeck - Brick and a hint of marzipan

A short train journey from Hamburg and suddenly it's medieval: the old Hanseatic city of Lübeck is located on an island surrounded by the waters of the River Trave. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow alleyways, Gothic brick façades and the famous Holsten Gate, which is an iconic landmark of the Hanseatic city. You can stroll through the historic centre, find cafés in old merchants' houses and at some point end up in front of a display full of marzipan – because that's also part of it here. A day trip that feels easy but lingers on for a long time.
